Above is the first laptop I used to make electronic music.
Also, above is the 2nd laptop I used to produce electronic music, mix video and perform live.
And also, above is the 3rd laptop I used to produce electronic music, mix video, edit & render video and perform live.
Now I use a Mac, and the the 2nd laptop is still used as back up for video mixing, but now the 1st laptop is too old, and the 3rd laptop is simply dead and beyond any repair which makes financial sense.

William Sides enjoying a beverage during his set at Velva's Leadway show on Saturday, December 13, 2008. Nicely done set and first time I've seen him rely entirely (or almost entirely) on keyboards. He had this old Yamaha unit that he said his dad found in the garbage. Fun stuff.
This is the 2nd act from the Velva show at Leadway on Saturday, December 13, 2008. I missed their names (I'll update the blog posting with the names when I find out who they are - editor's note: if I read the damn poster, I'd know they're Roth Mobot...duh). They were great. Tons of home made circuit bent toys all mixed perfectly into a collage of fun sounds. Very entertaining with amazing noises. Very cool.
DMG and Environmental Sound Collapse's set up for Nintendo DS and Gameboy based music. This is from Velva's show at Leadway in Chicago on Saturday, December 13, 2008.

Received a response regarding licensing deals for my music from Human Factor yesterday. Spent the evening going over their contract, getting the package together and getting it out. Also spent some time updating my BMI account with the songs to be licensed.
Hopefully something will come of this. Wouldn't mind selling a song to the Discovery Channel or for a commercial.
Scenes from the movie "Blood Sucking Freaks" will be mixed in with my VJ performance at the next Velva show. Google it. You won't be disappointed.

Episode 23 of my electronic music podcast, Objects From The World Of Machines, is now available.
This podcast is a practice peformance I did a few weeks ago, while trying out new software on a new computer on a new OS. I was very happy with the results. This was all done in one improvised take and has a very loose, very Orb-like feel to it. It's a nice little ambient techno piece. This is very similar to what you'll hear between more traditional songs at a Velva show.
Check it out here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ObjectsFromTheWorldOfMachines
Well, the Hotti Bscotti show last Saturday was a success. There was a solid turn out. Lots of other performers on the bill that were all great. The Velva performance went off without a hitch. Our latest format of "intro, jam, song, jam, song, jam, song, jam, song, outro" worked great. I personally really enjoyed the jams. We're becoming the "Grateful Dead" of the Chicago electronic music scene.
Probably the high point of the evening for me (non-music related) was meeting Lair, the lead singer of Stardust, a Bowie tribute band. That cat is awesome. He cracked me up all night long.
Looking forward to getting another show scheduled. Really enjoying performing right now.
By the time you read this the ranking might have changed, but currently my CD "The Harvest Of Exact Calculations" is "Top Album" for IDM at the http://payplay.fm/genre/idm site.

Alright...I've had my Mac Book Pro for a couple of weeks now, and it's going well. Here's what I've accomplished (or not) so far.
Now, I've been unsuccessful getting the Parallels image of my old Alienware hard drive going, but that's because that install of Windows from the old Alienware is in an unstable state. Basically, the image begins to boot and then doesn't quite make it. If I spent some time, I could probably fix that "install" of Windows, but I've downloaded VMWare Fusion instead, because it's my understanding that it makes use of my dual core processor. I'm doing a fresh install of Windows and will then reload my old software onto that.
So, as I type, I'm logged into a Citrix session, I have a virtual Windows session going and I'm running my browser and email on the Mac Book Pro...and it's not even sweating. Pretty damn cool.
Also, I've downloaded Ableton Live 7.x and Traktor DJ 3.x and installed them, and they both run phenomenally on the Mac Book Pro (using Mac OS 10.5.5). In Ableton, I've had 8 loops going with reverb, EQ, delay and compression on all of them without a hitch. No choking. No slow screen updates. Nothing like I had running Ableton 5.x on WinXP on the old Alienware.
I've also downloaded and installed Arkaos VJ. I haven't run Traktor and/or Ableton with Arkaos running at the same time yet. I'll be testing that in the next few days though and update the results here.
Here's some awesome sculpture by Greg Brotherton found on www.artistaday.com. Again with that space-a-licious Velva feel that I love.

Last Saturday morning at 5:30 AM, after 3 years of running 12 hours per day, my Alienware died. The hard drive has been salvaged. A replacement has been ordered. I'm going to try one of those hippy computers...a Mac Book Pro. If it sucks (or not), you will read about it here.
I thought this one was fun. It's by Travis Lampe on www.artistaday.com.

Hello, fellow electronic music heads,
It's been a long time between podcasts, as I have been performing in Detroit and Chicago and have nearly completed a 10-song release, but enough excuses and unto the meat...
This podcast was a warm-up I recorded before a Velva practice last Sunday morning. It was dreary and rainy and September which, I think, lent it's mood to this song.
