Here's something I like: 3 20-minute techno songs charting at 20, 21 and 22 on the Chicago Techno charts.

That's right, 6 Appartitions Of Lenin In A Cowfish Opus, Opus To Zarathustra And Misc Cowfish and Cowfish Opus To The Five Rings Of Musashi are on the charts. I did these songs over a year ago and thought they were "novelty" songs (20 minutes IS a long time for a song), but I've found interest in them from people who want something to listen to while they work. They're "driving" but they're "background" music too. I've personally used them on road trips. I enjoy the dichotomy of techno and cornfields.

Other (abbreviated) rankings:

I bought my first eBook today for my Palm VIIx. It's 'When Genius Failed' a history of the Long Term Capital hedge fund (yes, it's true - I'm a business geek).

I can't wait for Palm to come out with an mp3 player attachment that has serious memory on it. I already use the Palm for email, news (wireless and AvantGo) and "office productivity" (take notes directly into Word and Excel). Basically the little bastard rocks.

Once an mp3 player for it that's any good comes out, it will handle most of my media needs.

Truly a "killer app".

Absolutely Modern has been rejected by raw42.

Here's what the reviewer said:
"Found this one a little too experimental around the edges. The production is nice and there is good atmosphere in the tune but its just a little too abstract for tv/film use which is where i see this track fitting. I think it would be difficult for us to place with a label with our current contacts but not a bad tune at all."

I guess that means it's not commercial enough. Damn.

Still working on my next song. Have been experimenting with techno bass, beats and synths slowed down to 70-80 BPM and mixed with ambient pads. Seems to be working pretty well. Messing with the final effects and filters to add the right feel and fill out the tune. Should be ready for release in the next couple of days.

Probably tomorrow I'll have a new song uploaded to my mp3 site. I've been taking much longer now to produce songs since I've been dealing with raw42. There's more at stake now with potential licensing, so I spend a lot of time tweaking the songs to increase their quality, and if I think the song is even slightly weak, I don't bother uploading it.

About an hour ago raw42 accepted Atmosherocephalic. Here are the nice things they said about it:

Atmosherocephalic - Down Tempo
No real intro as such with this one, just straight in with lighty jumpy beats, smooth floating underwater styled fx and a deep sub bassline...very groovy with a definite non-aggressive feel to the whole track...

Last weekend I had a great time putting together the set for my August Madison gig (assuming it's actually going to happen - haven't had firm time/place confirmation from my contact there yet). Had both laptops hooked up to my new Vestax PCV-275 mixing board. Have the songs arranged so they start at 70 BPM and work their way up to a climax of 100 BPM then ease back down to 70 BPM again. Did I mention that it's an ambient/trip hop/down tempo set? People will be chilling out, and once I play my 100 BPM song their hearts will almost be beating...

As I'm sitting in my office at work (I've already been here working for an hour), I went out to my web site to listen to some music. While I was there, just for fun, I wanted to see how high Bog ranked overall. Here's what I found:

In Chicago, Bog ranks number 18 for ALL genres.
For Illinois, Bog ranks number 28 for all genres.
However, for the USA, Bog doesn't make the Top 600.

I've had more traffic to my site lately - more listens too.
I really think blogger.com is driving people here.
There's been mentions in the Wall Street Journal and the Economist in the last couple of weeks (of blogging, not of my site in particular, of course).
Don't know what else it would be...it's the only "promotion" I'm doing.
Haven't even gotten off my butt long enough to get out a newsletter, update my radiostation or even finish the song I started on June 20.

On to the rankings...

Bog is doing amazingly well. It ranks as the number 28 ambient song in the world, as well as, the number 298 electronic song in the world.

Nice things said about my songs on raw42:

"Simple Non-Linear Melancholic Swirl" Ambient
Gentle ambience with rolling backing and pensive piano. Stays on one level throughout.

"Bansuri Summer Sturm Und Drang" Trip Hop
A low-key blippy scientific illbient affair with unusual sounds and plodding underlying percussion combined with eerie/avant-gard effects and synth lines. Subtle, unusual, somewhat experimental.

"Brevity" Down Tempo
Dark minimal trip hop beats and gentle, subtle synth lines and echoed effects. A belchy and rugged ambient backdrop suitable as background music.

"Morphological" Down Tempo
Airy echoing chillout with a slow beat and drifting melodies potentially useful as a good atmospheric visual backdrop.

"Bog" Down Tempo
Slow but interesting mechanical intro with low bassline and ambient pads. Futuristic and methodical with a sense of expectancy.

The Monkey's Arm was rejected by raw42 today.

Comments follow:
"A lot more could be done on the mastering side - it sounds a little quiet to me. There are some good ideas in this, but it's a little disparate. I could see it would go down great at a free party on the right sound system, where the structure would not be so nit-picked, but for commercial release, it needs a lot of tidying up. :-)"
