Here's a really good EQ article from Tweakheadz.

The key points are regarding "Making The Mix Sit Right":

1. Fix with panning. By moving things left or right you can cure many masking problems. But not all. You can't move the kick of bass or vocal too far from the center or the whole mix gets lopsided. But you can move rhythm guitars, synths and percussion way off center and it helps.

2. Fix with EQ. Bass removal from your tracks does wonders. At minimum put a low cut (high pass) filter on every track except the kick and bass (which get their own more extensive treatment).

3. Fix by dropping one instrument for part of the mix so both the mask and masked are not playing simultaneously.

4. Removing the track entirely.

I saw an article regarding a self-professed satanist who kidnapped a 6-year-old girl in Chicago.

I didn't think anyone called themselves a satanist anymore without a punchline.

The term "box of rocks" comes to mind.

I bet he believes in Intelligent Design too.

-----

Ah...I was reading the article again and noticed "the satanist" goes to a special ed high school in Chicago.

I guess "box of rocks" is accurate.

Here's my favorite Dada poem. It's by Kurt Schwitters. It was published in 1919.

AN ANNA BLUME

EVE BLOSSOM

Oh thou, beloved of my twenty-seven senses, I love thine!
Thou thee thee thine, I thine, thou mine, we?
That (by the way) is beside the point!
Who art thou, uncounted woman, Thou art, art thou?
People say, thou werst,
Let them say, they don't know what they are talking about.
Thou wearest thine hat on thy feet, and wanderest on thine hands,
On thine hands thou wanderest
Hallo, thy red dress, sawn into white folds,
Red I love Eve Blossom, red I love thine,
Thou thee thee thine, I thine, thou mine, we?
That (by the way) belongs to the cold glow!
Eve Blossom, red Eve Blossom what do people say?
PRIZE QUESTION: 1. Eve Blossom is red,
2. Eve Blossom has wheels
3. what colour are the wheels?
Blue is the colour of your yellow hair
Red is the whirl of your green wheels,
Thou simple maiden in everyday dress,
Thou small green animal,
I love thine!
Thou thee thee thine, I thine, thou mine, we?
That (by the way) belongs to the glowing brazier!
Eve Blossom,eve,
E - V - E,
E easy, V victory, E easy,
I trickle your name.
Your name drops like soft tallow.
Do you know it, Eve?
Do you already know it?
One can also read you from the back
And you, you most glorious of all,
You are from the back as from the front,
E-V-E.
Easy victory.
Tallow trickles to stroke over my back
Eve Blossom,
Thou drippy animal,
I
Love
Thine!
I love you!!!!

Ship Blasted Pirates With Sonic Weapon

This is hellacool. The cruise ship attacked by Somali pirates used a "sonic weapon" to help ward them off. Basically the weapon directs a tight-beamed, very loud, smoke alarm-type tone at its target.

The article says smoke alarms are at 80 db and this weapon is at 150 db.

Here's a link to the Noise Center for comparison. This table shows 150 db is as loud as a jet engine taking off.

FYI. The loudest rock concert ever was at 126 db by the Who (see article). Note: 3 minutes 45 seconds of 130 db noise can result in permanent hearing loss.

Anyhow...after reading the article, I'm getting a new car horn...

So the EPA is citing a Chicago chocolate factory for 'opacity' (how dark the
plume from their smokestack is). The citation stems from multiple
complaints regarding the smell of chocolate from the plant.

However, the EPA isn't citing any of the local coal burning power plants
that are also in violation for 'opacity'.

This is the kind of thing that gets me pissed off.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my laptop was wigged out after travelling to and from Quebec (must have been the border crossing).

Called up Alienware Support and they narrowed it down to an overheating video card.

Oh, trivia fact for the day:

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME "DREAMDAZE" is...
...the thesaurus in Microsoft Word

No, really!

Type "trance" into Word, and the first two synonyms that appear are "dream" and "daze".

DREAMDAZE was one of several potential names that I floated by a small, select circle of friends (ok, I refer to them as a "focus group", but they really are all friends).

The focus group spoke and they said, "DREAMDAZE."

And so it is written.

The tradeshow season is "over" at work (well, the big one's over anyhow - we still have 3 more to do). Anyhow to celebrate, I purchased a couple of CDs of trance loops and have been playing around with them.

I have one song nearly complete, but right now it gets "muddy" about 3/4 through when the big pads come in. Need to remove some loops there or do some extra compressing or something to make it sound right.

What fun!

They're spinning Eleanor Again and Again, a little experiment drum'n'bass number of mine.

The next show is Wednesday May 18th at 9 PM GMT (that's 3 PM Central in the US).

If you're feeling nice, you can vote for me here. I'm not sure what voting gets me, but I don't think it's bad, so vote daily!

Thanks!

So I have a new song that's three quarters of the way finished. I'm enjoying it. It doesn't have a title yet, but it uses a lot of glitchy elements with some nice d'n'b drums. It's experimental (of course), but it's experimental drum'n'bass, so those of you who like my fast songs should enjoy it (you know who you are).

So it's tradeshow season again - which means my time to dedicate to my music promotion and production are limited. The big show is the week of 5/17 in Dallas. I'm sure I'll work on some music while I'm there and then go nuts on the promotion aspect of DREAMDAZE when I return.

On the positive side, I did get away for a few days to San Francisco last weekend. Had a good time visiting friends.

Got an email from Raw42 yesterday that an ad agency is considering an experimental drum'n'bass song of mine (Grandpa Ralph) for a commercial.

This is how Raw42 describes the song:
Abstract breakbeat sequences combine with smooth chord structures and light airy percussion - experimental drum n' bass.
