Illumined Pleasures is now available on electronicscene.

Jazzy, swinging free-form IDM. Quirky little blips and bleeps with lightly funky deep bass and fusion-styled beats.

Added Bansuri Summer Sturm und Drang to my electronicscene site.

Here's what Raw42 says about the song:
A low-key blippy scientific illbient affair with unusual sounds and plodding underlying percussion combined with eerie/avant-garde effects and synth lines. Subtle, unusual, somewhat experimental.

Way too busy to post this weekend.

Saw Blue Man Friday night. Last time I saw them was 5 years ago. Was awesome. Went out for Ethiopian food afterwards. Fun stuff.

Saturday, I had a charity event, family obligations then ran errands. Busy all day.

Spent the whole day with friends today. This is my first time at the computer today.

Time to catch up on email.

No Longer Meditative is now available on electronicscene.

Here's what Raw42 has to say about this experimental breakbeat song:
A breakbeat frenzy with lots of different breaks combined with various jazz elements, particularly lots of rhodes melodies, tinging bells and some sax hits. A bizarre experimental number, but still engaging.

Temporary holding from mp3.com until I clean it up...

Review of 'Brevity' at http://djsky.pngusa.net/dreamdaze.html: "This track has a gorgeous atmosphere, laid back beats accompany a collection of interesting and well picked sounds which deliver an enjoyable sonic experience. At no time does anything seem out of place which is a testament to the arrangement skills on display. All I would criticise is the overall production, just a bit of work to tighten up the sound and this one would be in my collection. Overall a very well put together example of ambience. 9/10."

Review of several tracks at http://www.randomartist.com/reviews.php?id=403: "DREAMDAZE combines a lot of diverse organic elements into the mix. Brevity, for example, sounds mostly live with some great ambient samples mixed against tribal beats. Face, scratches and brushes around a walking keyboard bass in a most unusual way adding in some nice textured pads. Good sound track material, that. Anthracite is probably my favorite track. Nice use of bass and drum loops balanced with cool breaks. For electronica that continues to suprise and please, I recommend sampling DREAMDAZE's entire playlist."

So this is how the music industry has changed already.

From all over the world:
I purchase virtual synths, sound editing programs and sequencers electronically and download them to my laptop.

In the US:
I make sounds with the virtual synths. I chop them into loops with the sound editing programs. I arrange the loops into songs with a sequencing program. I render them to a "high res" mp3 with the sequencing program.

In the US & UK:
I upload the song from the US to my publisher in the UK. My publisher emails a "yes" or "no" for acceptance. The contract is electronically signed. The publisher releases the song for digital distribution.

From all over the world:
Consumers buy my songs, download them and pay for them electronically with their credit cards.

In the UK & US:
The publisher pays me electronically from the UK directly into my checking account in the US.

Results:
Never has a physical good changed hands. Nothing but membranes vibrating air has resulted in the physical world.

Wild...

My publisher Raw42 today put forward my song Atmosherocephalic for consideration for a water commercial in the UK.

Here's what Raw42 says about Atmosherocephalic.

"Atmosherocephalic" - Down Tempo
No real intro as such with this one, just straight in with lighty jumpy beats, smooth floating underwater-styled fx and a deep sub bassline...very groovy with a definite non-aggressive feel to the whole track.

South Africa!

More stats from the previous week...

The reason I'm even posting this is because I'd never heard of Bouvet Island before - but the CIA Factbook comes through again.

Bouvet Island is an uninhabited volcanic island southwest of South Africa almost entirely covered by glaciers and difficult to approach. It was discovered in 1739 by a French naval officer after whom the island was named. No claim was made until 1825, when the British flag was raised. In 1928, the UK waived its claim in favor of Norway, which had occupied the island the previous year. In 1971, Bouvet Island and the adjacent territorial waters were designated a nature reserve. Since 1977, Norway has run an automated meteorological station on the island.

I guess one of the Norse weathermen there gave me a listen. Heh.

Worked a bit on a couple of new songs yesterday (same ones I've been working on for a while). On the song closest to being finished, I'm in the process of redoing the synth line used. The one I had didn't quite fit. It was 2 "organ-y", and after spending time trying to add fx to it to make it sound rougher, I gave up and am looking for a new high range riff. But once, I find it I'll drop it in, and I'll be good to go.

Had a good Halloween yesterday. Got home and dressed up as an alien (green, elongated feet and hands plus green mask), took the kid trick-or-treating (he went as Superman) and then hung with the neighbors. Halloween IS the best holiday. Had great weather for it too. There were a lot of superheroes out last night.

On an almost music-related note, I've installed SalesLogix and now have to restore my SQL database back up, and I can start mailing out demos again...

Here's what raw42 had to say about it:

For those of you scoring at home, yesterday I purchased some MSFT then sold a call against it plus I sold naked puts against DELL and INTC and also sold calls against existing SKO, AMGN and CLX positions.

Haven't worked much on music this weekend (well, haven't worked on any music at all actually). Did DJ my own party on Saturday night. Just a gathering of neighbors, nothing big, but always fun to hook up the gear and let rip.

Have been really digging the electronic music station on digital cable. That and the reggae station get major playage in my household.

Have also spent time picking stocks and options for my own personal trading. Unloaded half my EBAY position Friday morning. Had doubled my money on that one, so letting my winnings ride - so to speak. Looks like I'm going to pick up some MSFT and sell a SKO option for certain. Have some other option trades to figure out still. Will sell a put or two, and I am considering going long on some LEAPS but haven't made any final determination on what exactly yet.

I noticed that I had one listen from Svalbard and Jan Mayen below. I don't even know where Svalbard and Jan Mayen are. Guess I'll look them up...

And the CIA Factbook comes through. Looks like they're islands (figured that) which are part of Norway. There are no trees, and the only bushes are crowberry and cloudberry. Glaciers and snowfields cover 60% of the total area. Population is 2811. Seems they do a lot of coal-mining, trapping and fishing.

So today is already a good music day. Two new songs have been accepted by raw42 and someone in British Columbia purchased my CD.

Here's what raw42 said about my songs (by the way, I haven't uploaded them to mp3.com yet):

"Haunted City" Idm
Cool eighties arcade-styled intro is combined with simple beats and deep bassline hits - builds into a more breakbeat track with more wild warblings!

"Peculiar Vice" Illbient
Strange electronic blips and bleeps interweave themselves through a rough/dirty breakbeat - strength of the track lies in the amount of different layers of sound created - always morphing and changing throughout.

I've been so sick this week I haven't worked on any songs or done any mailings. It doesn't help that that the harddrive on my laptop is on the fritz. Charts aren't updated on mp3.com, so I have to actually write something instead of taking the easy way out.

Fighting a cold that I picked up last weekend. Still hasn't got it's hooks in yet though. I've been pounding the zinc and went to bed last night at 8 PM. Actually feel ok right now except I still have the sore throat. Will see how it goes, but I might be in bed at 8 PM again tonight.

My original 60 GB harddrive in my laptop is about to die. Takes 20 minutes to boot up and makes odd clicking noises. The diagnostics tell me to replace it. I do have another 40 GB harddrive in the laptop that I've been backing up everything to fairly religiously. Last night I backed up the SQL database that holds my contact management data to the good drive. Also backed up the songs I was working on this weekend (everything else is already backed up there).

These are the trials and tribulations of a laptop DJ. Sick body. Sick computer. I am the machine.

No country outside the US had more than 100 listens last week. Oh, well. Hong Kong did come close with 84 though. I guess that's a continuatioin of my "Asian Invasion" - or more accurately - my "Asian Infiltration" (since I'm one guy and don't have an army of roadies - hell, I'd be very efficient on tour: a bag of clothes, 2 laptops, a mixing board; if I could use the club's sound system, I wouldn't even need to bring speakers).

I was wondering why Mechaniceluard wasn't doing better on the charts, because it's a song I really like. It's a result of what happens when I listen to too much Aphex Twin - and it has an interesting story behind it.

I started this song at Logan International Airport in Boston while waiting for a flight to Paris. I continued to work on it over the Atlantic and finished it at the Royal Windsor Hotel in Brussels, near the Grand Place. At Logan, I did most of the loop selection. Over the Atlantic, I did most of the arranging. And, then at the Royal Windsor, I'd wake up every morning, and for an hour I'd tweak it, cut it, etc etc.

It's very much inspired by the Surrealist Eluard and jet lag.

Finding a cure for this devastating disease is very important to me. By raising funds and participating in Walk for Hope, I know I can make a difference.

You can make a difference too, by sponsoring me in the Walk for Hope. It is easy – just click this link (or copy it to your browser) and check out my personal donation page. You can use your credit card to donate online. It is safe, easy and 100% tax deductible.

I like it that Faster Than I Crawl is still charting well. It's funny, because I did the song on a lark, and it was rejected by raw42, but lots of people still like it.

Well, Slough is no longer a featured song on mp3.com, but it seems the attention it brought my songs still remains. What's cool is that the attention cuts across genres. Slough is an ambient song, but the songs topping the charts now are IDM (Illumined Pleasures), down tempo (Raindrop From Heaven), hard house (Faster Than I Crawl), drum n bass (Eleanor, Again and Again) and happy hard core (Wretched Bliss).

Incomplete Song Status:

Started working on a house song yesterday. Have a good start to it. Still haven't finished the d'n'b song I started 2-3 weeks ago. Have a very strong start but after about 1 - 1.5 minutes I need a direction to go and haven't settled on one yet.

I remixed Lugubrious to make it 'better produced'. Right now it's kind of quiet, but I added some EQ and compression and tweaked it a bit and it sounds much better now. I'll upload that to mp3.com tonight.

I also finished up a new song titled 'Raindrop From Heaven'. It's a down tempo piece. I'll be uploading it to mp3.com tonight too.

I've got a kickin' dnb song going if I can find some nice pads to fill it out. Right now I have cool bass, awesome breaks, some nice one shots (bass, triangles and cymbals), but I definitely need some pads still...

Have been short on postings lately (outside of simple rankings) due to the fact that I'm in AZ on business. The good news is: the hotel has fast internet. I'm going to start making it a point to only stay in hotels with fast internet. This rocks.

During my airport/plane/travel time, I remixed an old song (Lugubrious) - tightened up the production, still need to cut about a minute off it. Also worked on another down tempo song (about 1/4 done with that) and started a new d'n'b song (about 1/8 done with that one).

Did my publicity photos yesterday. If you ever need any done and you're in the Chicago area, check out www.mrpchicago.com. Matt does great work. He does corporate events and publicity photos mainly (his site reflects the wedding side of his business right now - he's in redesign mode).

The other interesting thing (to me) about Suburban Summer Evening Back Porch Riff is how I work the drums.

I've taken separate snares, high hats and kicks and layered them. So "snare 1" starts, "high hat 1" comes in, "kick 1" comes in - everything plays together then "snare 1" drops out and "snare 2" starts, then "high hat 1" drops out and "high hat 2" starts, then "kick 1" drops out and "kick 2" starts, then everything "2" plays together and the process repeats with "3", "4", etc.

On top of that, I do my trademark "chopping" of the loops in a certain pattern that repeats itself over each loop (snare, high hat and kick). Basically:

(1) the loop plays once straight (its 1st iteration), then
(2) I chop out the 3rd section of the loop in its 2nd iteration, then
(3) I repeat the first quarter of the 1st section of the loop 4 times where the 3rd section of the loop would be in its 3rd iteration, then
(4) I repeat the last half of the last quarter of the loop twice in its 4th iteration - after which I drop the loop and don't reuse it.
