'Card bombed' the Exit night club in Chicago last night.
Not really much of an ambient down tempo trip hop crowd, but maybe I'll get a few listens and/or some exposure.

Went to the Art Institute in Chicago today. Good stuff. Saw "Art of the Medicis" - which was ok, but it wasn't as cool as the photos.
Photographers featured were Louis Faurer and Robert Frank.
Check it out if you can. Faurer had a lot of cool shots of NYC from the 40s (mainly), and Frank had photos from a variety of times/places (lots of collage/montage with writing on them - if you're into that sort of thing, then you'll like Frank).

Had a good concert night last night. Saw the Bosstones, the best dressed band in the country. Was quite fun.
They played the Vic in Chicago and had 3 other bands with them. Don't know the names of the first two bands. One was bad - i.e., not tight. The second was tight but mediocre.
When I was in line for the show, I couldn't figure out why there were so many teeny bopper girls waiting to get in. I mean, when did the Bosstones become a chick band. Well, the third band (Simple Plan) was the reason. They're friggin' N'Sync or something. They were so "dreamy", and they "loved Chicago" - at least that's what they kept saying. At that point, you could tell the Bosstone fans, because they were either the ones flipping off Simple Plan through their entire set or the the ones who headed for the bar and stayed there...
But when the Bosstones came on, the place went nuts (of course). Eight guys in suits - who wouldn't go nuts? And their dancer. What a great gig! How did he hook up with the band? What's his story? Just some balding, middle-aged dude in a suit with enough energy to power the place for a week jumping and thrashing all over the stage. Fun stuff.

Illumined Pleasures is number 24 on the mp3.com World IDM charts today!
It's funny. I used the same loops in a drum 'n' bass attempt at a song about 6-12 months ago. The song was rejected by raw42 (as it should have been - I listen to the original now, and I think "lame").
I was revisiting some old songs and thought the loop selection was good, but I had failed during "implementation". So I started from scratch, added a couple of loops, messed with some fx's on the loops, cut up some of the loops and re-arranged them, and, eventually, came up with Illumined Pleasures.
It just goes to show that the more you keep at this stuff, the more you learn and the better you become - just like everything else in life, I guess.

Current songs published by raw42 along with descriptions provided by raw42 when they exist:
Ambient
Simple Non-Linear Melancholic Swirl: Gentle ambience with rolling backing and pensive piano. Stays on one level throughout.
Down Tempo
Atmosherocephalic: no real intro as such with this one, just straight in with lighty jumpy beats, smooth floating underwater styled fx and a deep sub bassline.. very groovy with a definate non-aggressive feel to the whole track
Bog: Slow but interesting mechanical intro with low bassline and ambient pads. Futuristic and methodical with a sense of expectancy.
Brevity: Dark minimal trip hop beats and gentle, subtle synth lines and echoed effects. A belchy and rugged ambient backdrop suitable as background music.
Morphological: Airy echoing chillout with a slow beat and drifting melodies potentially useful as a good atmospheric visual backdrop.
Placid Abstraction: Minimally funky intro slides into slow tempo floating pads and carries on in same vein throughout.
Serene Anguish
Electronica
Chthonic Cerumen: Techno digital intro with minor IDM tendencies sit overtop light experimental melody with small percussive elements.
Experimental
Premature Ossification: snappy hats combine with deep bass and mysterious pads
The Honorable Margaret Chase Smith
IDM
Understanding The Breakdown Of God: laidback yet tense beats with world music influenced vocals
Trip Hop
Bansuri Summer Sturm und Drang: A low-key blippy scientific illbient affair with unusual sounds and plodding underlying percussion combined with eerie/avant-gard effects and synth lines. Subtle, unusual, somewhat experimental.

I'm surprised by some of the song appearances in the latest rankings. A couple of techno and trance songs from my Swamp CD have hit the charts. Swamp was a fairly interesting experiment for me. It was a transition CD. I had just begun experimenting in the ambient realm on Glacial and decided that it would be interesting to mix it up a bit. On Swamp I begin with an ambient song in the key of A (Bog), and then using one or two of the loops from the first song, I shift keys to B and morph into a techno song (Marsh). I continue in the same vein of moving some loops forward to the next song and alternating keys and styles for the entire CD. Of course, each song is named by a synonym for Swamp in order to maintain the "theme". So without further delay...

All right, so nothing gets done when you have guests in for the weekend...but I did at least work on my 'Hermetic' song long enough to realize I'm probably going to trash it. I might be able to salvage the weird ambient dissonance I have going on, but I definitely need to replace the bass lines I'm using, and if I do that, then the drums are in question too. Damn.

I think tonight is going to be one of those nights when I stay up with a pot of tea after everyone else has gone to bed and work on CD art for Technique and maybe add some new songs to my radio station. If the urge takes me, I'll work on the song I started in August on a lake in rural Maine.
The song is titled 'Hermetic' for now. I started working on it at about 5 AM one morning. The sun was just beginning to come up, but it was still dark when I started. It was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and I was in the living room of an old cabin with a sleeping bag wrapped around me, looking out over the foggy, foggy lake. My laptop was running off batteries since there were no 3-prong outlets in the cabin. As the sun rose and the song developed, the fog became more whispy and wraithe-like.
It's been in an unfinished state since that morning when my low power alert on the laptop advised me to save what I was working on and shut down. Maybe it's time to finish it up...

Well, not a lot of promotion and/or creation going on these days. Morphological is going to be put forward for a UK commercial, but that's about it. Not holding my breath, but at least it's a shot. I REALLY need to have 24 hours without distraction so that I can finish up 2 songs that are in process, finalize my CD art for Technique, and go through my voluminous email and add people to my radio station (and maybe have them add me to theirs in return).

There seems to be a spike in demand for 20-minute techno songs. 6 Apparitions Of Lenin In A Cowfish Opus, Opus To Zarathustra And Misc Cowfish and Cowfish Opus To The 5 Rings Of Musashi rank 10, 11 and 12, respectively, on the highly competitive Chicago techno charts. These songs represent my "toe-dipping" into the processes of "automatic music". I developed a 10 minute structure that repeats twice in each song then used the same structure with different (though similar) loops to generate the three songs.
On another note, Serene Anguish is number 76 on the Chicago Electronic charts.

Going to a charity event on 'The Spirit Of Chicago' tomorrow evening. Burning a CD of my raw42 accepted tracks right now. Will talk to the Event Planner (brother of a co-worker) about possibly using me as a down tempo DJ at some of his events. Will give him a copy of the CD I'm burning now as a set sample. Use my usual trick of ramping up from 70 BPM to a climax of 112 BPM then back down to 80 BPM to finish over 52 minutes. Not a bad sample set. Will see what happens.
And after 3 more songs are accepted by raw42, I will have about 60 minutes of music, and it will be time to start shopping for a CD deal...

Had a great punk rock weekend (last weekend). Went to see the Suicide Machines at the Metro; they were there with Gob and Guttermouth. Of course, my friend and I were the oldest one's there, but we had a great time.
The Suicide Machines have 4 "major label" (Hollywood Records) releases - I guess it would be more accurately stated that they have 4 CDs that get distribution. The first album is their best, mixing ska, hardcore and metal (usually all in the same song) very well. Their 2nd is pretty good, being mostly hardcore. Their 3rd (done around the time they were touring with No Doubt) is an ill-advised trip into pop-dom (in other words, it stinks). Their latest is back on par with the quaility and style of their 2nd CD.
During the show, they played mostly songs from their 1st and 2nd albums with a few new songs and hardly anything from their 3rd CD. Great show. Lots of energy.
Gob are the clown princes of punk rock. Each song featured an ironic metal pose by some member (or multiple members) of the band. Lyrically they're like NOFX. Awesome and entertaining.
Guttermouth proved they were lovers, not fighters. It was lady's night on stage with various female members of the audience and entourage making appearances. Also very entertaining and they worked the crowd well. I, of course, enjoyed the fact that the bass player wore a Bollweevil's T-shirt - which was a great example of synchronicity (plate of shrimp), since my friend and I were discussing the fact the crowd in the mosh pit were much more polite than in the late 80s/early 90s when we were frequenting more shows - which led to talk of the infamous Bollweevil's show when the band, the crowd and Metro security were in an all out brawl over stagediving. I believe as a result of that show the Metro banned stagediving. Hell, Metro security is giving the crowd near the front of the stage water these days...

Even though it's more Breakbeat than House (yes, it's another song with a genre that I need to change), Revel (my first song ever) is number 10 on the Chicago House charts. Gotta love it when an old song shows some life!
It looks like someone has been listening to my mediocre Techno too, judging by the chart positions of Zarathustra and Vapours.
And for a guy who can't do Trance (though I've tried), it's refreshing to see a few Trance songs (Snowy Day, Electrogratification, Chill and Savitur) on the charts.

Did I mention that I planned to work on 3 songs this weekend plus received 2 CDs of loops but did absolutely nothing aural. Instead I went the visual route and added some new gear to the gear page on the site.
Did a cool new poster and added a black baseball cap and a bunch of "luggage" (i.e. various forms of back packs).

On another note, another song I haven't been watching (Wretched Bliss) is number 22 on the world wide happy hardcore (techno) chart.

Placid Abstraction is number 2 on the worldwide ambient chart on mp3.com, as well as, number 15 on the worldwide electronic chart and number 90 for all genres worldwide.
Chthonic Cerumen is number 30 on the worldwide trip hop chart followed by Understanding The Breakdown Of God at number 42, Absolutely Modern at number 68 and Bansuri Summer Sturm und Drang at number 93.
So ALL my trip hop songs are in the top 100. Pretty cool.

I've been watching Placid Abstraction so much that I haven't even been paying attention to my other songs lately.
Chthonic Cerumen is number 79 on the worldwide mp3.com trip hop chart.
It might have had a higher ranking earlier. I'll have to go back and check my stats.

Just finished practicing for my August Wisconsin date (assuming it happens which I doubt that it will but who knows).
I must say that I have an awesome set (if you like ambient down tempo trip hop).
If you don't then my set would suck and I suggest you come over to my place and we'll hang out listening to old punk. Of course, if you don't like the whole punk/hard core thing and you don't like ambient down tempo trip hop then we can hang and enjoy some classic jazz. By classic jazz I mean Miles or Bird or Coltrane. And we'll play some backgammon too. And if you don't like that then maybe we can just listen to some classical although if we aren't playing chess at the same time then we might be bored. And, hey, there's always reggae or ska (but we'll be in the back yard for this playing bocci ball and grilling previously living things).
If none of this sounds good to you, then why are you bothering me?

More score keeping:
Placid Abstraction dropped to 826 listens on 8/2/2, but it is still number 1 on the mp3.com worldwide ambient charts but has moved down to number 67 for all genres on mp3.com.
Alas, the slow fade to obscurity begins.
There is no love in this world anymore.

Wow! I'm excited.
My latest ambient song Placid Abstraction is NUMBER 1 on the mp3.com WORLDWIDE Ambient chart and NUMBER 101 on the mp3.com WORLDWIDE ALL GENRE Chart!
The Number 1 Ambient position is impressive enough, but being Number 101 OVERALL (that's for ALL songs including heavy metal, pop, hard core, dance, spoken word, comedy, country, etc etc etc) is really exciting!
The song had 1047 Total Plays (993 Qualified Plays) yesterday! WITH NO PROMOTION FROM ME!
I can't wait for the upload utility to start working on raw42...
